What Is a Billable Unit (BU)?
Billable Units (BUs) are used in vScope to measure the assets and resources included in your license. Below is an overview of how BUs are calculated based on different asset types.
Backup
Section titled “Backup”- 1 BU = 1 Backup Job, Backup, or Repository
Certificate
Section titled “Certificate”- 1 BU = 1 web (SSL) certificate
Client
Section titled “Client”- 1 BU = 1 machine where the operating system is classified as Client.
- 1 BU = 1 Azure or Amazon EC2 virtual machine
Cloud Spend
Section titled “Cloud Spend”- 1 BU = 1 licensable user account in Azure (Microsoft EntraID)
Container
Section titled “Container”- 1 BU = 1 Docker Container
Database
Section titled “Database”- 1 BU = 1 database (e.g., MS SQL, MySQL) or schema (e.g., Oracle)
Directory
Section titled “Directory”- 1 BU = 1 user account (local or domain accounts)
Web Server (IIS)
Section titled “Web Server (IIS)”- 1 BU = 1 site
Mobile
Section titled “Mobile”- 1 BU = 1 mobile OS (e.g., Android, iOS, iPadOS)
Network
Section titled “Network”- 1 BU = 1 network-connected device (e.g., switches, access points, etc., excluding printers), found via SNMP
Printer
Section titled “Printer”- 1 BU = 1 printer (found via SNMP)
Server
Section titled “Server”- 1 BU = 1 asset identified as a server via operating system
Storage
Section titled “Storage”- 1 BU = 1 concrete storage pool
Virtualization
Section titled “Virtualization”- 1 BU = 1 virtual machine or virtualization host
