Tags from Discovery
With Tags from Discovery, you can extend and customize vScope’s inventory by collecting additional tag values directly from your scanned data sources.
This allows you to align asset data with your organization’s unique terminology, compliance requirements, and operational needs — beyond the standard attributes that vScope automatically collects.
When to use
Use Tags from Discovery when the value already exists in a scanned system. If the data you need lives on another asset type, create a Relationship-based Tag instead.
Creating a Tag from Discovery
- Go to Tags > Created from Discovery.
- Click Create Tag.
- Select the Asset Type and Data Source for your tag.
- Give the Tag a clear Name.
- Select the Attribute from the data source to fetch the value.
- Attributes are listed with the same naming as in the source system, so you can search by familiar terms.
- Choose the Expected Format (e.g., text, number, date).
- Click Save.
- Run a new discovery for the data source to populate the tag.
Example: Adding BitLocker Status
- Data source: Windows Machines scanned via WMI.
- Attribute:
BitLocker Encryption Status
from the Disk object. - Tag name: Disk Encryption Status.
- Format: Text.
- After discovery, add the tag as a column in the All Machines table to see encryption coverage across devices.
Using Tags from Discovery
Once created, these tags can be used anywhere in vScope:
- Tables & Reports: Add the tag as a column to view or filter assets.
- Dashboards: Group assets by the tag value to visualize patterns (e.g., encryption coverage by site).
- Automation: Combine with Dynamic Tags for conditional labeling.
FAQ
What happens if I create a tag that already exists?
If you create a tag with the same attribute as a built-in vScope tag, a new tag will still be created with your chosen name.
This can be useful for:
- Replacing vendor-specific names with your own (e.g., Employee ID → Personal ID).
- Creating multiple tags for the same attribute but with different formats (e.g., number, date, or text).
Troubleshooting
- Value is empty: Check that the attribute exists for the asset in the source system and that a new discovery has been run after creating the tag.
- Unexpected format: Ensure the chosen Expected Format matches the data type in the source system.
- Duplicate data: Consider reusing an existing tag if the attribute is already collected.
By using Tags from Discovery, you turn hidden data from your scanned systems into searchable, filterable, and reportable attributes — giving you a more complete and customized view of your IT environment.
